Mission 2: Techno Teaching

http://prezi.com/sqcy89d0cjjq/

Here is the presentation for the meeting last night. I was really encouraged by everyone's comments. So great to hear you are being daring!

I still have a Wii and some Nintendo DSs. I will keep hold of them until Friday and then email all staff to see who wants to use them. I hate to see kit not being used!! I hope those of you who did take things are having a 'play' and even thinking of ways to use them in your classrooms.

We did not have a chance to speak about BEHAVIOUR. Would you rather do this online on the blog or email? Let me know! Sian will be looking at rewards and Kerry sanctions.

Lastly please let me know HOW I can support you in lessons with the missions - happy to do any dirty jobs (so to speak!!)

Thanks again and looking forward to reading your blogs,

N

  1. Had a go with the DS's. Would be brilliant if they could connect to the web as we've subscribed to sites in mfl. I asked the kids if it helped at all having 10 mins brain training at the start - they mostly said there was no point and it didn't help. 8b3 managed to start sending messages about each others mums to each other on the chat thing and as it was annonomous, there was no way of tracking it all. Could be useful the message sending thing though, but I guess some would need to get over the novelty of insulting each other. Like a lot of gadgets, I feel the kids know far more than me and so find the loopholes very quickly. If I could work out the way they all connect and create users or something, perhaps it'd be great way for kids to communicate, but then it's a skill being able to simply talk to each other and using the gadgets doesn't necessarily help.

  2. By the way, anyone got any ideas for 'Flash'? Haven't had a gander as yet, but'd be interested to get any thoughts?

  3. Second attempt to write on blog - I think I will cut it into 2 posts this time...

I used the Nintendo DS's today with 9a1. Mr Fountain is an ICT co-ordinator at a primary school so he is well read-up on the educational uses of DS's, which was handy!

You can use DS's to communicate with other DS's in the room in up to 4 chat rooms. I used it with group work, having 4 groups each with their own chat room. They were given a scenario (Chile earthquake) and had to use the DS's to co-ordinate a relief effort in groups. Each group member had a role (e.g. government official, police, Red Cross etc) and they had to work together to respond to the different "Breaking News" scenarios every 4 mins, e.g. roads blocked, hospitals full etc. They had to communicate with DS's because the phone lines were down...

  4. Part 2... reflection on the lesson...

It was fun, and I enjoyed it as well as the students, but not so sure it stretched them Geography-wise. I monitored all 4 chat rooms with 4 spare DS's, which helped to stop the silliness which occurred in the first few mins of them logging into their chat rooms. I wouldn't use it with a larger class (there were 22 students in today) because otherwise the 4 groups would be too big and I wouldn't have 4 DS's to monitor/AfL the group work.

Some students gave feedback on post-it notes and they all said it was fun, and some claimed to learn about Chile, disaster relief, and communication. I asked them how else DS's could be used in schools and most said "Maths", which is the obvious choice of course.

  5. Third point (sorry!)...

It would be great to use the DS's for the internet, which would allow me to use them a lot more in Geography. However, you need a game with a Net card to do that, which our sets don't. Just an idea if the school did purchase them. Definately great for Maths though.

  6. Hi,

I got to do my other mission from last week this morning with 8a1. Two g and t students had planned a 20 minute part of the lesson and they delivered it. It was brilliant! Learning and afl took place and i have it on video if anyone wants to see. The two students really enjoyed the experience and the others also like being 'taught' by students!

  7. Would quite like to see that Sian, would be interested to see what they had to do.

Is there a list of all the different mission 2's as I can't see me doing anything with this Flash thing - had a play on the CD and didn't really get it to be honest and (this is gonna sound really bad) I'm really not one for working out how programs work (as you may have guessed from my social networking site comments).

  8. Other staff have now started using the DSs.

"Year 7 feedback – loved the brain-train starter over 50% of group said that it helped them get ‘in the mood’ for maths – would have been better for all to have had maths version
Year 10 feedback – loved the brai train at the start, we then used the discussion forums to facilitate learning and teaching. Has excellent potential (AFL, Peer ass, L&T) but would lend itself better to some subjects than others given the size if the screens. I will definitely use again but plan for their use better now I know what they are capable of. Cheers, Phill T."

If you have finished with a set please can you return. I only seem to have 12 in one set - please can all be returned when you are not using them - otherwise I will start worrying!

Loving the comments - please keep it up!

Martin - are you free tomorrow to chat?

  9. WALLWISHER
    www.wallwisher.com
Wallwisher is an online noticeboard where you can stick ‘post-it’ notes
You will need to register by giving an email address & a password.
You can then create a wall on a topic of your choosing.
You can then invite others to post on your wall via email or, in the classroom, by creating a hyperlink.

These ideas are marie's - thank you!

It is recommended that you ask to moderate all messages before posting.
This is a plenary I did with Y11:

They really enjoyed its instant nature (we were in a computer room at the time) but there’s no reason why you can’t set up a wall and ask students to feedback to you over a period of time.
The presentation below may give you some more sophisticated ideas...

I don’t think you’d use this every day BUT it’s a nice little toy for a text.

  13. Hi all,

    Feedback from mission 2:

Chris: Glogster - excellent for interactive posters - something different

Martin: Flash - allows you to create animations on the computer which you can interact with. Allows you to make your own flash presentations. A bit frustrating and confusing.

Also used DS lites with 8B2 - used brain training - kids said that it didn't really help. 8B3- used the chat rooms but got a bit silly. Needs a specific task for which the ds is suitable.

Nick: Looked at a website for inspiration - not very inspiring!

DS discussion: In what situations are ds lites useful? Games are not really specific to subjects and communications are good but an expensive way of communicating! PSPs are probably more useful and have more applications. DS lites are perhaps too young

Sian: My mission was to use Rafiki, which I already do and I also looked at setting up a video conference with a school abroad. How do I do this? I have schools who are keen but I need to know how!

Chris: Set up a Skype room which small numbers of students can use during the lesson. Students can go in and out during the lesson. The creative classromm would be an ideal place for a video conference suite to be based.

Sian: This would be brilliant for MFL too, students could have a conversation with a student in another country.

Chris has agreed to help Sian set up a video conference.

Feeding back at briefing: we don't think that briefing is the right time for this. Perhaps we should have a short period of time at the start or end of a staff meeting.

Dates: these dates are a problem for all. We will have to rotate days.

Next meeting: Bring a friend along to the meeting.

Mission 3: learning spaces - envelopes opened - lots of laughter at this point!!!

Let's have a notice board in the staffroom to raise awareness. We could pin up all the missions.

Behaviour: Sian has had feedback from the school council - lack of consistency. Nicole has set up a staff survey. Then there will be observations of 8B3, 10A1 and also 9A2 also needs monitoring. This will give us the info to build a strategy.

Low level disruption is a huge problem.

Ideas for new missions: let's go back and revisit the old missions. If someone had a really successful mission, we could all try it. This would have more impact on our teaching. Or we could select a previous mission that appeals to us. We need to spend more time trying out different missions within the focus or try the same mission with more challenging classes. We need to spend longer on each mission so it becomes embedded in our teaching. Then we can coach a 'friend' in future sessions.

Chris: Teachmeet - loads of teachers with new ideas share new practice - it's an international thing and a few of us could go on 20th May 6-9.

  14. We can't post new threads - it would be great if we could please

  15. A resources page would be a good idea for the blog.

  16. Great comments guys.

Let me know if you wish to post comments and which email and I will set it up.

We are going to have an issue with dates. Will discuss with Cassie.

Think the idea to go back is good - but also feel we need to move on too. How about we bring our favourite missions to the first meeting after Easter and share with the others to begin with?

Will look at a hosting site for resources.

    Thanks

    Nic
